47 minutes ago - Comment "So there's a shocking lesson that military buffs have been slow to face: military superiority doesn't matter nearly as much right now as birthrate and sheer ruthless will." - bob "This illustrates one of the real brain-twisters of contemporary demographic struggle: if you really hate the enemy tribe, the best thing you could do would be to make them rich. Rich people don't have nearly as many kids. Of course there are exceptions like the Ultra-Orthodox Israelis, who are fairly well-off and just dedicated to making as many kids as possible, but generally, money distracts people from starting big families." - ⓞnor "So the nightmare scenario that anti-immigrant bloggers are always predicting, where the U.S. turns into one giant Mexico, might end up being true in what you might call "racial" terms -- I mean, your second-grade class photo might be two-thirds Hispanic -- but those Hispanic faces would have absorbed a whole born-again American world picture that actually comes from the Scots-Irish who settled the American south hundreds of years ago." - ⓞnor |
Dave Winer posted a message on Twitter "Should Twitter charge high-spew users? http://tinyurl.com/5okyzk" 46 minutes ago - Comment yeah, that'll really help their cause right now. way too many people would bail. - Damien Franco Not sure about the concept but I love the characterization - "high spew users". - Brian Sullivan Yeah I want a t-shirt that says I am High-Spew! - Dave Winer Only the pros. :) - Todd Jordan Maybe in terms of limiting API access so heavy tweeters will want to upgrade, like Flickr does with the Pro accounts. - Tris Hussey Nice Memorial Day Link bait from Om, he should donate todays ad revenue to the VA. Twitter's founders and backers have plenty of cash and when they sell it their going to have more. - paul mooney no. - rambn Twitter should charge the high spew users, and funnel a small percentage to the followers of the spew, generating bigger audiences, er, I mean communities. - Logical Extremes They'll just be wishy-washy on a specific nbr on that and wind up pissing off a large percentage of the userbase ......via feedalizr - JohnBfromMemphis |

1 hour ago - Comment I'm amused that Robert Scoble is censoring my comments in response to his mis-informed posts. That's what I get for trying to discuss system architecture with a journalism major. :) - Dare Obasanjo Not Scoble like -- what do you mean by "censoring your comments"? - Brian Sullivan I posted a comment and it hasn't shown up but others have. I tried reposting it but Wordpress gave a duplicate comment error so it definitely was submitted. Not like it matters, enough people have commented pointing out that it is weird for him to be arguing system architecture when it isn't his forte. - Dare Obasanjo I'm not censoring it. Probably got caught in spam filter. I hate these things. Will go look now. Yup, it was in the spam folder. Should be on the site now. - Robert Scoble I had similar problems on Robert's and others blogs and the only way I could find to clear it was to go through the spam blocking service and have them fix it. - Brian Sullivan This is a fairly common problem with askimet - Damien Franco |

2 hours ago - Comment Comments on a blog != Intellectual property. :-) - Louis Gray No, we're watching the potential benefit of fair use - Aviv there is no such thing as intellectual property - there is only wishful thinking, and pulled on that legislation, stupid as legislator which did it... property is material - it can't duplicate or copycat, to get it with you, you have to take it away. - silpol I think that's overly idealistic, silpol. In a capitalist economy, if I can't derive some value from my ideas (that is, sell them to someone else), innovation does not happen. I stand to make more money selling ideas and products that already exist. The idea behind copyright and IP is that creativity and innovation must be protected for progress. In our economy, protection means the ability to make money. - Mark Trapp liked for Aviv's comment! - edythe @itafroma it is _not_ overly idealistic - I do not say that ripping off something from your effort is wrong, I just say that old skool was not able to match on progress. hence they used old model on new thing, and now we see how it doesn't keep - first it was digital media, now ideas... - silpol Agree with silpol - digital information that is reachable and copyable over the internet is not property. There can certainly be value created without a monetary incentive. Sell physical things or figure out a way to make digital information uncopyable. - Tad Donaghe |
Louis Gray commented on a blog post on Disqus 3 hours ago - Comment "FriendFeed's goal is not to kill the services that feed it. There are elements of FriendFeed that make Google Reader and Twitter less unique, but Google Reader and Twitter help give FriendFeed its content and foundation. My stats show that Google Reader shares dominate my activity there, and as Google Reader shares also feed ReadBurner, RSSMeme, Feedheads, etc., there's no way I'm stopping." - Louis Gray There is an overlap on information between them, yes, and it's gonna grow in time - but I'm actually using Google Reader to catch up with FF via RSS when I'm offline for a longer time. Sure its not interactive in in respect to conversations, but gets me there faster and thats what I like when I'm looking at 1000+ items. Now what I would really really enjoy - in this app eat app world - is a FF to Google Reader _thing_. Just to mark as read in GR what I click in FF and star things that I here "Like". - Dani Radu I use Google Reader to get the articles into FriendFeed to start with. It's a beautiful marriage: Google Reader introduces it, FriendFeed discusses it. - Michael Beck Well, it so happens that FriendFeed sometimes goes further on and introduces also. Its a one way marriage, beautiful as it is :) If I'd be a superhero, I'd wish for the 'mark as read' superpower :D - Dani Radu |

niniane posted a message "Which are good stores for buying a bed? Currently I'm considering http://www.overstock.com/Home-...." 6 hours ago - Comment Are you also buying a mattress? If so, I suggest going to one of the mattress stores and checking out their wares in person. I think Mattress Discounters have same day delivery. - April Buchheit I should probably buy a mattress. Do mattress stores have good bed frames? Or just crappy ones. - niniane I would buy the bed and mattress at separate stores unless you're on a really tight budget. Keetsa mattresses are incredible: http://www.yelp.com/biz/keetsa..., and they can ship to your door. - Chris White I know it sounds like a commercial, but the sleep number beds are the most wonderful things ever!! I was a skeptic but a friend (who was going through chemo at the time and couldn't find any other bed that made her comfortable) convinced me and I have since convinced other skeptics to at least try. It shapes so well to your body and what other bed can you change because you back is feeling a little stiffer that day and a firmer mattress would feel better. Anyway, that is my two sense. - Rachel L Fisher Chris... why bed and mattress at separate stores? That seems long on both budget AND time. And Niniane, what about IKEA? OW! $*#(@ that hurt... ouch ow!!!!!!!1 :p - Adam Lasnik Sit&Sleep is biggest bed online/retailer, biggest selection. I bought 2 beds there, unless Macy has big sale. http://www.sitnsleep.com/home.... - Pokai |
Louis Gray shared an item on Google Reader 6 hours ago - Comment I agree with a lot of what Alexander is saying. I don't think traditional banner ads will work well in "social" media. I do think "advertising" can work, but it needs to provide a fair 50-50 value trade between community and advertiser: so advertiser provides true value (free content, entertainment, etc in a non-intrusive and non-obnoxious way) in exchange for the community's attention and energy. And this new advertising can't get in the way or slow people down. And the community has to control it. And it has to be grown organically. Hard yes. Impossible, no. Movie companies (Disney) and folks at Deep Focus are doing things like this. And Crispin Porter Bogusky is great at this too. - Ginger Makela Ginger, an interesting thought. The reason I could see it work is that it could potentially provide everyone with value. But still, the context needs to be right. You can't get in the way of friends interactions for example - Alexander van Elsas The future of Internet advertising is user made. The key is to make it interesting and/or entertaining. While viral advertising is currently "working" (I believe, I don't have hard numbers), there will be more and more backlash if people feel like it's not genuine. In comes user generated advertising - paying people to make advertisements that other will enjoy. http://tinyurl.com/ydqnf6 is a great example of this. While this is video, I believe it can translate well to other formats as well. - Vince DeGeorge Vince viral advertisement may be viral, but in most cases the click through rate for any advertisement is really low. User generate advertisement could well work, but there is definitely a trust issue involved too. For example, if you would be paid to produce or to show advertisement, would your friends like that? Difficult to say, but I doubt getting advertisement from a friend is by any better than from an advertiser. - Alexander van Elsas Karp writes from an agenda and invariably discounts the value of traditional media and advertising. As the internet becomes more like "smart TV" we may be surprised at how well traditional messaging works... Re: user-generated ads -- beyond user-generated buzz, I don't see this as a significant factor. No brand manager in their right mind would hand over that much control. Not even one at Apple ;-) - Sprague Dawley Working for a marketing agency I can say that while we all know that social advertising means engaging and fun experiences and not boring banner ads, selling this to a client that is still set in the ways of pure product promotion and solid metrics relating to leads is the difficult part. Social networks/media are where peoples' attention is and therefore there is must be an effective way to advertise in this space. But generic banner ads would be the same as running a magazine ad as a TV commercial. - Devlin Dunsmore I added my two cents to the discussion here http://www.winextra.com/2008/0... - Steven Hodson I click on ads at my favorite sites just to help keep them alive. - Alex C. Williams Alexander, I totally agree about the context needing to be right, and that advertising can't get in the way of people interacting with their friends. Seth Godin had a video on his site a few weeks ago that summed this up really well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Advertisers will have to figure out how to be a player in white. - Ginger Makela Alex, that 'll be a whole lot of clicking you need to do to keep em alive ;-) - Alexander van Elsas |
